Every year around this time, I ask myself the same question:
Why am I doing this again?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I don\u2019t need to teach a photography class.
I\u2019m not doing it to sell gear, pad a r\u00e9sum\u00e9, or convince anyone I\u2019ve \u201cmade it.\u201d
I do it because every time I walk through Ulsan with a camera, I\u2019m reminded how much beauty people walk past without ever seeing.<\/p>\n\n\n

This will be the fourth consecutive year<\/strong> I\u2019ve taught photography at the Ulsan Support Center for Foreign Residents<\/strong>, and somehow it still feels necessary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Because photography, at its core, isn\u2019t about cameras.
It\u2019s about attention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Most people already have everything they need sitting in their pocket. The problem isn\u2019t equipment \u2014 it\u2019s that we\u2019re moving too fast, scrolling too much, and rarely slowing down long enough to look<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This class exists to fix that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This Is Not a Gear Class<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Let\u2019s get this out of the way early.<\/p>\n\n\n

If you want to argue about lenses, specs, or whether full-frame is \u201cworth it,\u201d this isn\u2019t that class. I don\u2019t fetishize equipment. My camera is a tool. Same as yours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What I care about is whether you understand:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  • light<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • timing<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • framing<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • intention<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

    Whether you\u2019re shooting on a phone, film, or a mirrorless camera that costs more than your rent \u2014 the fundamentals don\u2019t change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    This class is about learning how to use what you already have<\/strong> and stop outsourcing your creative confidence to technology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    How the Class Actually Works<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

    We meet weekly.
    We learn something specific each time \u2014 not everything, just one thing done well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Then you leave.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    You walk.
    You shoot.
    You pay attention.<\/p>\n\n\n

    Each week, students get a photo mission<\/strong>. Not homework in the academic sense \u2014 more like an excuse to go outside, slow down, and try something intentionally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    You send me your photos.
    I respond with personalized feedback<\/strong> \u2014 what\u2019s working, what\u2019s not, and what to focus on next.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Not public shaming.
    Not vague encouragement.
    Actual, usable feedback.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    This part matters. Most people never get it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The Exhibition: A Real Ending<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

    At the end of the course, we don\u2019t just clap politely and disappear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    We hold a public exhibition at the Ulsan Culture & Art Center<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
