It’s been a while since the pavement felt the collective footsteps of shutterbugs exploring the cityscape of Ulsan, South Korea together. Months have slipped by since I last orchestrated a photowalk, guiding my students through the winding streets and hidden alleys of our beloved city. But as the hiatus lingered on after our December gallery exhibition, the urge to reconvene with fellow photographers gnawed at me incessantly.

When Philip Brett proposed the idea of a photowalk in Ulsan, I didn’t hesitate for a second. Sure, it was January, and the weather posed a formidable challenge. But what’s life without a little adventure, right? Just like the last ill-fated photowalk that I had planned for Seongnamdong, where rain drenched our spirits, we braced ourselves for whatever nature had in store for us. This time, I pushed forward without cancelling.

As expected, the rain descended upon us with relentless fervor. Despite our hopes for a reprieve, the cold droplets persisted, drenching the streets and our enthusiasm. Yet, to my surprise, a dedicated cohort of photographers defied the elements, emerging from Daegu and Busan, alongside a contingent of my former students. Their resilience was nothing short of inspiring.
Undeterred by the inclement weather, we plunged into the labyrinthine covered markets of Ulsan, tracing the veins of history that pulsed beneath the modern facade. These alleys whispered tales of bygone eras, offering glimpses into the city’s rich tapestry of culture and commerce. With each step, we peeled back the layers, immersing ourselves in the soul of Ulsan.

Amidst the rain-slicked streets and bustling markets, we paused for a timeless tradition: the group photograph. A moment frozen in time, immortalizing the camaraderie forged amidst adversity. It was a testament to the indomitable spirit of the photography community, united by a shared passion for storytelling through images.

Seeking refuge from the elements, we sought solace in the welcoming embrace of PAAN cafe. Amidst steaming cups of coffee and animated conversation, we basked in the warmth of camaraderie, forging bonds that transcended the confines of our lenses.

To those who braved the cold and rain on that January day, I extend my heartfelt gratitude. Your presence transformed a dreary afternoon into a vibrant tapestry of shared experiences and mutual inspiration. And to Philip Brett, whose unwavering dedication breathed new life into the Daegu Ulsan Photography Club, I offer my sincerest appreciation. Your efforts have rekindled the flames of creativity within our community, igniting a passion that burns brighter with each shutter click.

As we reflect on the memories forged amidst rain-soaked streets and bustling markets, let us eagerly anticipate the next chapter in our photographic journey. May our future photowalks be filled with laughter, exploration, and the timeless beauty of shared experiences captured through the lens.
In the heart of Ulsan, amidst the ebb and flow of life, we discovered the true essence of photography: not merely capturing moments, but embracing the adventures that await around every corner. So let us venture forth, with cameras in hand and hearts ablaze, ready to seize the unseen wonders that await. For in the pursuit of artistry, there are no barriers, only endless possibilities waiting to be uncovered.
